The title already sounds crazy, who would want to hike with a baby? Well be prepared because it isn’t the easiest thing to do, but it is so rewarding! I have so much trial and error and hopefully my fails, or cool ideas can help you feel confident in hiking with your little. In this blog I want to cover what to pack in the backpack. Now, I am in no place to give advice and after every hike I find something that makes my life easier. This is just me sharing from experience. Let’s get started!
When we look at the backpack it’s self, look at getting a pack with a hydro (I recommend a 3L), the poco plus baby carrier does have the option to add your hydro pack in there! (I am sure most child carriers have this option but do your research). Pros of having a hydro pack is that it is easy access to your water source without having to fish around your pack for a water bottle. I also find with a hydro you are carrying more water without taking up bulky space as you would be with a water bottle. Now with that left over space we have to fill our pack with baby shit, here is somethings I include:
- Portable/ refillable wipe dispenser
- Foam/ foldable camping cushion (summit seats) that I use as a place to lay baby or to do a quick change (there are so many options, research the best for you)
- Baby Food Pouch – Easy snack with a twist on and off cap ! (My baby is 5m old and find this super handy, but I also seen moms use it for their kids that are over a year)
- Diapers !
- Diaper garbage bags – I use the diaper genie on the go dispenser
- Hiking Poles – to be honest I just started using these when I started packing a baby. It helps so much for weight distribution & balance. It has saved my butt a few times!
- Bear Spray! My husband enforces to put it somewhere accessible. Get a bear belt or have it somewhere you can grab it quick. We have one that attaches to our backpack waist band.
- Snacks for you & food for baby. I was an exclusive pumper. After 5 months I have weened myself down to combination feeding with the majority being formula. I find bringing pre-made formula in the pack super convenient! You can even get the nipples that attach to pre-made bottles, so you can even cut out bringing a bottle. If you breast feed even better !!! You have food on the go 🤍
- Garmin in-reach mini – satellite communicator in case of emergencies
- Small first aid kit
- Full rain suit (over the clothes) for babe ! I have a one piece that I found at Costco!
- Rain cover for hiking backpack or front Carrier
- Extra pair of clothes (I just got the merino wool base layer for baby, so I will only need to change her clothes if she had an accident- not due to sweating or temperature changes)
- Toys & soother safety connector
